CHAPTER 9: ARPEGGIOS

One of the easiest ways for a guitarist to get creative on his/her instrument is to experiment with arpeggiating the chords of common progressions. Instead of strumming the chords, which can come across as rather dull, the notes are plucked individually. And the great thing about arpeggios is that you can pluck the notes of each chord in several different ways, which gives you countless note combinations.

Let’s take a look at a few…

CHORD-BASED ARPEGGIOS

Let’s start with a basic I –vi–V–IV progression in the key of C: C–Am–G–F. Here’s how the chords sound if we strum them in a straightforward manner:

Now let’s take our C, Am, G, and F chords and arpeggiate each one, moving from the lowest note in the chord to the highest while using the rhythm from our previous example.

Sounds pretty good, right? While strumming certainly has its place, arpeggios can sometimes be the missing ingredient in your songs.
